Excitement filled my insides as the plane took off at 7am. I didn't sleep the night before in preparation for this trip. Everyone said I wouldn't want to leave but I thought it was just because of the beautiful sites and warm weather. However as the trip continued I found it was the people the attitude of the island that made me want to stay. Everyone was polite, everything was a little slower.
Arriving I was already tired from the six hour flight to Oahu and still another three hours until we got to the hotel. The first person we met was a young man named Lucky, hoping this was an omen for the trip I finally relaxed. Perhaps a little too much. Upon unpacking all of our belongings I realized I left the back pack with all my clothes at the airport! So no cute vintage outfits for me. Sudden fear surged through me and I thought to myself what was I going to do. Then in the next instant, I took inventory of what I did have, my medicine, my makeup, my ID, and my debit card, so all I really needed was a bathing suit and a night outfit. All was going to be alright, I probably over packed anyway. The next day we headed to the store and I got a bathing suit and shorts, I was in Hawaii what more could I ask for.
The first day trip was snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. I had never seen so many fish in my life, nor had they ever been this colorful. It felt as if I had been transported to another world it was so beautiful. Got to watch out for those eels though.The next wonderful trip was Kiaking in North Shore. While we were there Pipe Masters was going on although we never got to see the event happening, I saw the waves and wow they were huge, some as tall as two story houses. The kiaking though was calm in a river that went through residents back yards. It was fun and a turtle as big as a tire followed us up and down the river.
This trip however wasn't just some willynilly vacation, I was honored to witness a two wonderful people get engaged on the beach in Lanakai where the sand is as fine as flour.
We all celebrated the evening away in Waikiki and the next day we swam with Sharks, an experience it was great and adrenaline pumped through me. The boat ride to the cage seemed to last forever. The waves crashing against the boat.
I stepped down the ladder with my snorkel on and went under staring at the sharks face to face. Still I think eels are a bit scarier.
As the time went by we met some cool locals and the whole attitude polite mellowness wafted into us and I didn't want to come back. I even found that sarong I was looking for. We spent time on beaches, eating and driving on highways that seemed too pretty to be means of everyday travel.
Finally we visited the Hanauma Valley to swim in the Waterfall, a garden so beautiful I wondered if it was truly real.
On the way home I was sad, but also grateful to have shared this experience with people I love and it will be with me forever.
